The area is one of the world's ten "Hottestbiodiversity hotspots" and has over 7,402 species of flowering plants, 1,814 species of nonflowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species, 6,000 insects species and 290 freshwater fish species it is likely that many undiscovered species live in the Western Ghats. At least 325 globally threatened species occur in the Western Ghats.

Agumbe is known as Chirapunji of South India as this place is next to Chirapunji in receiving a very high rainfall. So, you can just imagine the beauty of this place, rain forests covered hills, waterfalls, ghats, exotic plants, flaura, and fauna. Agumbe is situated at 2,710 feet above sea level in Karnataka. Agumbe should be a must visit place for nature lovers. It is a haven for rare plants, reptiles, and animals. Many new species have been discovered here and they are named after this place. For example, Selenopsagumbensis spider, Tarennagaumbensis a shrub, and so on.
King Cobra, Liontailed macaque, Cane Turtle, Tiger, Dhole, Hornbills, Sambhar, Atlas moth, Flying lizard, Leopard, and Indian Gaur are some of the fauna found in this region. Many birds have made this place their home.
